Vascular age testing is the process of measuring the CIMT or Carotid Intima Media Thickness for the purpose of identifying a patient's risk of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

"You may look and feel one way on the outside, but your arteries actually could be much older than one realizes,"

said Dr. Howard N. Hodis of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

The Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT) examination provides a direct measurement of atherosclerosis, even in its earliest stages before it causes symptoms or starts to block blood flow.

The CIMT examination uses ultrasound technology to measure the thickness of the first two layers of the carotid artery located in the neck, where plaque which can block blood-flow first develops. Thickness of the artery wall is an early indicator of vascular disease. The thicker the arterial wall, the greater the risk for plaque development and eventually heart attack or stroke.

It is non-invasive, convenient, safe, painless and available at an affordable price.

The CIMT uses sophisticated ultrasound equipment, and requires expert interpretation, therefore it is not widely available.

Who should have a CIMT test?

The CIMT test is most appropriate for individuals at risk for heart disease based on cardiovascular risk factors of one of the below:

Family history of heart disease and/or stroke
  Overweight or Physical Inactivity
  Tobacco user
  High blood pressure
High LDL or low HDL cholesterol
  Elevated triglycerides
  Metabolic syndrome
  Diabetic

Heart disease is the number one killer of American men and women. About every 26 seconds, an American will suffer a heart attack and about every minute someone will die from one.

Early Detection Can Lead to Early Intervention. CIMT provides early detection of risk for heart disease. It's never too late to reduce your risk for heart attack or stroke. Your physician can use the results of your CIMT scan, in combination with your cardiac risk factors, to create a heart-healthy action plan.

Many patients who develop heart disease have normal cholesterol levels and lack other indicators of risk.

Reverse existing hardening of the arteries and decrease the risk for a second heart attack, stroke, or other cardiac event.

CIMT can be reduced by lifestyle modifications or therapeutic interventions.

The American Heart Association (AHA) and Adult Treatment Panel of the National Cholesterol Education Program (ATP III) recognize CIMT as a reliable and safe means for assessing subclinical vascular disease.
